Green Bay
Green Bay Green Bay, city (1990 pop. 96,466), seat of Brown co., NE Wis., at the mouth of the Fox River on Green Bay; inc. 1854. An important Great Lakes harbor, Green Bay is a port of entry, with heavy shipping and a large wholesale and jobbing trade. Its industries include papermaking, food and dairy processing, meatpacking, and auto part manufacture. Jean Nicolet established a trading post on the site of Green Bay in 1634; many notable French explorers and missionaries followed. The permanent settlement, the oldest in the state, dates from 1701. The key to the Fox-Wisconsin water route and thus an entry to the Midwest, Green Bay became a fur-trading center and was occupied successively by the French (1717), the British (1761), and the Americans (1816). With the settlement of the Old Northwest after the War of 1812 and the decline of the fur trade, Green Bay became the trade center of a lumber and farm area. Of interest are the National Railroad Museum and many historical buildings, in cluding the Tank Cottage (1776). A branch of the Univ. of Wisconsin and a technical college are in the city, which is also the home of the Green Bay Packers professional football team. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. What Is the Definition of Internalized Racism
What does internalized racism mean? One might describe it as a fancy term for an issue thatââ¬â¢s pretty easy to grasp. In a society where racial prejudice thrives in politics, communities, institutions and popular culture, itââ¬â¢s difficult for racial minorities to avoid absorbing the racist messages that constantly bombard them. Thus, people of color sometimes adopt a white supremacist mindset that results in self-hatred and hatred of their respective racial group. Minorities suffering from internalized racism, for example, may loathe the physical characteristics that make them racially distinct such as skin color, hair texture or eye shape. Others may stereotype those from their racial group and refuse to associate with them. And some may outright identify as white. Overall, minorities suffering from internalized racism buy into the notion that whites are superior to people of color. Think of it as Stockholm Syndrome in the racial sphere. Causes While some minorities grew up in diverse communities where racial differences were appreciated, others felt rejected due to their skin color. Being bullied because of ethnic background and encountering harmful messages about race in greater society may be all it takes to get a person of color to begin loathing themselves. For some minorities, the impetus to turn racism inward occurs when they see whites receiving privileges denied to people of color. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t want to live in the back. Why do we always have to live in the back?â⬠a fair-skinned black character named Sarah Jane asks in the 1959 film ââ¬Å"Imitation of Life.â⬠Sarah Jane ultimately decides to abandon her black mother and pass for white because she ââ¬Å"wants to have a chance in life.â⬠She explains, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t want to have to come through back doors or feel lower than other people.â⬠In the classic novel Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, the mixed-race protagonist first begins to experience internalized racism after he witnesses a white mob burn a black man alive. Rather than empathize with the victim, he chooses to identify with the mob. He explains: ââ¬Å"I understood that it was not discouragement or fear, or search for a larger field of action and opportunity, that was driving me out of the Negro race. I knew that it was shame, unbearable shame. Shame at being identified with a people that could with impunity be treated worse than animals.â⬠Beauty Standards To live up to Western beauty standards, ethnic minorities suffering from internalized racism may attempt to alter their appearance to look more ââ¬Å"white.â⬠For those of Asian descent, this could mean opting to have double eyelid surgery. For those of Jewish descent, this could mean having rhinoplasty. For African Americans, this could mean chemically straightening oneââ¬â¢s hair and weaving in extensions. Also, people of color from a variety of backgrounds use bleach creams to lighten their skin. But not all people of color who alter their physical appearance do so to look ââ¬Å"whiter.â⬠For example, many black women say they straighten their hair to make it more manageable and not because theyââ¬â¢re ashamed of their heritage. Some people turn to bleach creams to even out their skin tone and not because theyââ¬â¢re trying to uniformly lighten their skin. Whoââ¬â¢s Accused? Over the years, a variety of derogatory terms have cropped up to describe those likely suffering from internalized racism. They include ââ¬Å"Uncle Tom,â⬠ââ¬Å"sellout,â⬠ââ¬Å"pochoâ⬠or ââ¬Å"whitewashed.â⬠While the first two terms are typically used by African Americans, pocho and whitewashed have circulated among immigrants of color to describe people who have assimilated to white, Western culture, with little knowledge of their native cultural heritage. Also, many nicknames for those suffering from internalized racism involve foods that are dark on the outside and light on the inside such as Oreo for blacks; Twinkie or banana for Asians; coconut for Latinos; or apple for Native Americans. Putdowns such as Oreo are controversial because many blacks recount being called the racial term for doing well in school, speaking standard English or having white friends, not because they didnt identify as black. All too often this insult demeans those who donââ¬â¢t fit into a box.à Accordingly, many blacks who are proud of their heritageà find this term hurtful.à While such name-callingà hurts, it persists. So, who might be called such a name? Multiracial golfer Tiger Woods has been accused of being a ââ¬Å"selloutâ⬠because he identifies as ââ¬Å"Cablinasianâ⬠rather than as black. Cablinasian is a name Woods devised to represent the fact that he has Caucasian, black, American Indian and Asian heritage. Woods has not only been accused of suffering from internalized racism because of how he racially identifies but also because hes been romantically involved with a string of white women, including his Nordic ex-wife. Some people view this as a sign that heââ¬â¢s uncomfortable with being an ethnic minority. The same has been said about actress and producer Mindy Kaling, whos faced criticism for repeatedlyà casting white men as her love interests on the sitcom The Mindy Project. People who refuse to date members of their own racial group may, in fact, suffer from internalized racism, but unless they declare this to be true, itââ¬â¢s best not to make such assumptions. In any case, children may be more likely to admit to suffering from internalized racism than adults. A child may openly yearn to be white, while an adult will likely keep such wishes internalized for fear of being judged. Those who serially date whites or refuse to identify as an ethnic minority may be accused of suffering from internalized racism but so are people of color who espouse political beliefs considered detrimental to minorities. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Ward Connerly, a Republican whoââ¬â¢s led the effort to strike down affirmative action in California and elsewhere, have been accused of being ââ¬Å"Uncle Toms,â⬠or race traitors, due to their conservative beliefs. Whites who associate mainly with people of color orà politically align themselves with minority groups have historically been accused of betraying their race as well and dubbed names such as wiggers or n---er lovers. Whites active in the civil rights movement were harassed and terrorized by other whites for seemingly ââ¬Å"sidingâ⬠with blacks. Discussing With Others Itââ¬â¢s impossible to tell if someone suffers from internalized racism simply based on their friends, romantic partners or political beliefs. If you suspect someone in your life suffers from internalized racism, try to talk to them about it, if you have a good relationship with them. Ask them in a non-confrontational manner why they exclusively associate with whites, want to alter their physical appearance or downplay their racial background. Point out positives about their racial group and why they should be proud to be a person of color.

Chicago Referencing Free Essays
Chicago Author-Date Referencing 2007 The Chicago Author-Date referencing style has two basic systems of documentation. There is the humanities style (which can also be known as the footnote and endnote or the notes and bibliography style), as well as the au- thor-date style. This guide follows the author-date system of referencing. We will write a custom essay sample on Chicago Referencing or any similar topic only for you Order Now This involves citations within the text cor- responding to a full bibliographic entry in the reference list at the end of the document. The in-text citations include the authorââ¬â¢s last name, followed by the date of publication in parentheses. The bibliographic entry in the reference list includes all the other necessary publication information. When using EndNote, it is recommended that the style system to use is Chicago Curtin 2007. Note: this page is only an introduction to the Chicago Author-Date referencing system. Curtin University Library provides a modified version of the author-date system presented in: The Chicago manual of style. 2003. 15th ed. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press. How to cite references: Chicago style. 2006. http://wwwlib. murdoch. edu. au/find/citation/chicago. html It is very important that you check your department or schoolââ¬â¢s assignment guide as some details, eg. punctuation, may vary from the guidelines on this page. You may be penalised for not conforming to your schoolââ¬â¢s requirements. The information and examples contained on this page are chiefly derived from the above sources. What is Referencing? Referencing is a standardised method of acknowledging sources of information and ideas that you have used in your assignment in a way that uniquely identifies their source. Direct quotations, facts and figures, as well as ideas and theories, from both published and unpublished works must be referenced. There are many acceptable forms of referencing. This information sheet provides a brief guide to the Chicago Author-Date referencing style. Within the text of the assignment the authorââ¬â¢s name is given first, followed by the publication date. A reference list at the end of the assignment contains the full details of all the in-text citations. Why Reference? Referencing is necessary to avoid plagiarism, to verify quotations, and to enable readers to follow-up and read more fully the cited authorââ¬â¢s arguments. Steps Involved in Referencing 1. Note down the full bibliographic details including the page number(s) from which the information is taken. In the case of a book, ââ¬Ëbibliographical detailsââ¬â¢ refers to: author/editor, year of publication, title, edition, volume number, place of publication and publisher as found on the front and back of the title page. (Not all of these details will necessarily be applicable). In the case of a journal article, the details required include: author of the article, year of publication, title of the article, title of the journal, volume and issue number of the journal, and page numbers. For all electronic information, in addition to the above you should note the date that you accessed the information, and database name or web address (URL). 2. Insert the citation at the appropriate place within the text of the document (see examples below). 3. Provide a reference list at the end of the document (see examples below). In-Text Citations Use the name of the author, followed by the year of publication when citing references within the text of an assignment. Where authors of different references have the same family name, include the authorââ¬â¢s initials in the in-text citation i. . (Hamilton, C. L. 1994) or C. L. Hamilton (1994). If two or more authors are cited at the same point in the text then they are included in the same in-text citation, separated by a semicolon e. g. (Brown 1991; Smith 2003). They are presented alphabetically by author. When directly quoting from another source, the relevant page number must be given and quotation marks placed around the quote . When paraphrasing or referring to an idea from another source which is a book or lengthy text, include the relevant page number, as this might be useful to the reader. How to Create a Reference List In general, page numbers should be included in all in-text citations, as many schools insist on this practice. A reference list only includes books, articles etc that are cited in the text. A bibliography is a list containing the sources used in developing a publication and other sources the author considers might be of use or interest to the reader. The reference list is arranged alphabetically by author. Where an item has no author it is cited by its title, and ordered in the reference list or bibliography alphabetically by the first significant word of the title. The Chicago style requires the second and subsequent lines of the reference o be indented, as shown in the examples below, to highlight the alphabetical order. 2 Examples of Referencing Books| In-Text Example| Reference List Example| EndNote X (which reference type? )| Single author| ââ¬ËThe theory was first propounded in 1982ââ¬â¢ (Horwood 1982, 65)ORââ¬ËHorwood (1982, 65) claimed thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢| Horwood, J . 1982. Nt 2580 Unit 7 Assignment free essay sample
There are many different ways to go about this topic the one I am going to pick is a public key infrastructure (PKI). One of the security options that we are going to use is Privacy or confidentiality. This will keep all information secret from all people unless you are authorized to see it. This will help with employeeââ¬â¢s not finding things that they should not see like social security numbers, address, and sensitive documents for the company and so on. Having this as a security options is great. I would implement this on all of the networks that I would manage. The next feature that I will suggest to Richman Investment would be Access control. Access control restricts access to network resources and would require the user to have privileges to the resources. This would go hand and hand with the first feature that I suggested. You will need this for the first feature that I picked to give the users proper permissions to resources and this will help keep users out that should not have access to the resource. We will write a custom essay sample on Nt 2580 Unit 7 Assignment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Lastly would be a Receipt this will help the user to make sure that the item they are emailing is getting to the proper destination. It will send the user sending the email a receipt saying that the person has received the email. This help so that people know that the user got their email and someone else didnââ¬â¢t. Also this would be good to have a digital signature on the emails so the users know that it came from someone in the company. To have the digital signature you have to authenticate by logging in and that will show that you are the one on the computer and the one sending the email. There are so many different feature to implement on this network that are just as good as these one I picked. I think that these are some of the better ones and Richman Investment will befit from these being implemented into their new secure network.
